Agostinho Tavares da Silva Neto became ambassador of Angola to the United States on Nov. 18, 2014, having previously served as Angolan ambassador to Canada (2011-14).

Other postings include head of the Asia and Oceania Department of Bilateral Cooperation at the Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2007-10); counselor and first secretary at the Angolan Embassy in Brazil; head of department at the Directorate Asia and Oceania at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; third secretary at the embassy in India; and administrative attaché at the embassy in Spain.

Ambassador Neto joined the Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in March 1977, serving in the Directorate for Cooperation and Economic Affairs and subsequently the Directorate of Cooperation and Economic Affairs, where he became secretary of state for cooperation in 1978 and assumed leadership of the Human Resources Department.

Born in Luanda on Jan. 16, 1954, Ambassador Neto holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the University Center of Brasilia in Brazil. He is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Ambassador Neto is married to Prudência de Sousa Carneiro da Silva and has five children.
