Ms. Jean Francois Lantheaume, Counselor, became the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Holy See on July 28, 2011. 

Archbishop Pietro Sambi, who had been Ambassador of the Holy See to the U.S. since February 2006, died July 27, 2011 at the age of 73 from complications relating to a lung surgery.

His funeral was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in D.C. on Aug. 6, and a funeral mass was held in his hometown of Sogliano al Rubicone in northern Italy on Aug. 2.
