Washington celebrates Leif Erikson’s legacy

On Oct. 9, the embassies of Iceland and Norway in Washington jointly hosted a first-of-its-kind event honoring the legacy of Leif Erikson, in honor of America’s 250th birthday. Erikson is a Norse explorer believed to be the first European to set foot in North America more than a thousand years ago. President Franklin D. Roosevelt first established a day in his honor in 1935, and since 1964, it has been an annual observance.

Guests flocked to the Norweigian Embassy, dressed in their best Viking attire, to enjoy Nordic delicacies, join the dance floor and engage in cultural exchange recognizing the generations of Nordic immigrants who have followed in his footsteps.

Celebrating Italian contributions to American science

The influence of Italian physicists has played an important part in shaping modern physical science in the US. Rome-born Enrico Fermi led the team that achieved the first world’s first artificial nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1. Tivoli-born Emilio Segrè advanced particle physics through the discovery of new elements and the antiproton. And Venice-born Bruno Rossi pioneered cosmic ray research and space physics, helping to establish astrophysics as a major field in the United States.

Their legacies were the focus of an Oct. 27 event hosted at the Embassy of Italy in partnership with Smithsonian Associates. The evening opened with remarks from Italian Ambassador Marco Peronaci, Italian Cultural Institute of Washington Director Elena Settimini and Deputy Under Secretary for Special Projects at Smithsonian Institute Lisa Sasaki, before turning to a panel discussion exploring the exchange between American and Italian physicists in the 20th century and their impact on American scientific developments.

Featured speakers included panelists Piero Martin, professor of experimental physics at the University of Padua, and Patricia McBride, deputy director for science and chief research officer at Fermilab, moderated by Kristen Frederick-Frost, curator in the division of medicine and science at the National Museum of American History.

This event was part of Smithsonian Associates’ Enduring Power of International Exchange series in the Our Shared Future: 250 initiative. The conversation was followed by a light reception.
