His Excellency Oumar Daou

Oumar Daou was appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Mali to the United Nations on June 5, 2008.

Prior to his appointment, Daou was the Director of Political Affairs in the Mali Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2008. Before that, he was Deputy Director of Political Affairs in the Ministry from 2003 to 2004 and Head of the International Organizations Department from 2001 to 2003.

From 1998 to 2001, Daou was the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Observer for the implementation of the United Nations plan for Western Sahara in Laayoune, working with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). Between 1996 and 1998, he served in the Office of the Secretary-General of OAU in Addis Ababa. He was a Counsellor in his country’s Embassy in Cairo from 1989 to 1995, while also acting as Charge d’Affaires for the Liaison Office in Addis Ababa. From 1986 to 1989, Daou was Head of the Africa-OAU Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mali. Prior to that, he was Head of the Africa-OAU Desk from 1980 to 1986.

Daou has represented his country at many international conferences, including at the United Nations.

He earned a diploma in philosophy and a certificate in modern history from the University of Beijing. He also received diplomatic training, including from the Cairo Institute of Diplomatic Studies in 1990, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in 1986. In addition, he was a 1987 recipient of a United Nations Disarmament Scholarship.

Daou was honoured with the award of Friendship Citizen of Nagasaki, Japan in 1987 and the Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mali in 2006.

He was born on May 13,1955, is married, and has three children.
