Seng Soukhathivong became ambassador of Laos to the United States on June 4, 2010.
Ambassador Soukhathivong previously served various postings in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including director general of the Department of Asia-Pacific and Africa (2007-10), deputy chief of cabinet (2006-07), and deputy director general of the Department of Consular Affairs (1997-2001).
In addition, he served at the Lao Embassy in Washington, D.C., on several prior occasions, including as minister counselor and deputy chief of mission from 2001 to 2006, as counselor from 1996 to 1997, and as first secretary from 1993 to 1996.
He was also third secretary and second secretary at the Lao Embassy in Thailand (1984-90), as well as secretary to the deputy minister of foreign affairs and the Secretariat of the Lao-Thai Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (1991-93).
Ambassador Soukhathivong — who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982 — holds a master’s degree of arts in foreign languages from Russia and a diploma in politics and public administration.
He is married to Somdy Soukhathivong and has a daughter and son.
