Thomas Smitham

Thomas Smitham joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1991. His most recent assignment was as chief of staff to the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment at the U.S. Department of State, the Secretary’s principal advisor on these issues.

Prior to returning to Washington, Smitham headed the energy and environment unit at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels from 2005-2008. Just before his assignment in Brussels, he served as a Special Assistant in the office of the Under Secretary, covering Western Hemisphere issues.

From 1999-2000, Smitham was seconded to the British Foreign Office, where he worked on European Union economic issues. This was followed by an assignment to the economic section at the U.S. Embassy in London. Prior assignments in the Foreign Service include Mexico City, Lima, the Vatican, and Rome.

Smitham received a master’s degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a BA in history from the University of California, Berkeley.
