His Excellency Edwin “Ned” Nolan


Edwin “Ned” Nolan was the Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at U.S. Embassy Ottawa. Previously he was Chargé d’Affaires ad interim and Deputy Chief of Mission of Embassy The Hague from 2010-2013.

Ambassador Nolan is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor. Prior to arriving in The Hague, he served in the Western Hemisphere Affairs Bureau of the Department of State in Washington as Director of the Office of Canadian Affairs (2008-09). From 2005-2007, he was Deputy Director of the Office of UK, Benelux and Irish Affairs, and from 2002-2005 Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Ambassador Nolan served four years in Dublin, Ireland, as Political/Economic Affairs Chief where he worked extensively on the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

Other assignments have included Deputy Director of the Policy Planning and Coordination Office for Latin America at the Department of State, and Country Director for the Nordic countries in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Earlier postings included Norway, Sweden and Canada, working in political affairs with a focus on arms control and political/military issues. He is a four-time recipient of the Department of State’s Superior Honor Award.

Ambassador Nolan is a native of the Boston area. He received his Bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Boston College and carried out graduate study at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
