Last month, the Embassy of Timor-Leste celebrated the nation’s accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). After years of negotiations towards securing its official recognition as the 11th member of the regional bloc, the country’s government announced its pledge towards “peace, prosperity and unity in Southeast Asia” on Oct. 26.
Ambassador José Luis Guterres acknowledged the contributions of Timor-Leste’s negotiating partners in this historical achievement, emphasizing future plans for strengthening the economic relationship between ASEAN and the United States.
“This is the beginning of a new chapter for our country and for our engagement in Southeast Asia”, said Guterres, highlighting the recent approval of the national budget represents a crucial step toward advancing regional cooperation and strengthening Timor-Leste’s role within ASEAN.
Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia’s newest nation, first applied to ASEAN in 2011 and attained observer status 11 years later in 2022. Representing Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyễn Quoc Dũng, chair of ASEAN in Washington, the country’s Deputy Chief of Mission Hoang Thi Thanh Nga praised Timor-Leste’s notable progress in upholding ASEAN values, of “sovereignty, peaceful dialogue, and cooperation.”
Together with Malaysia’s Deputy Chief of Mission Saeed Farizal Syed Muhammad, on behalf of Ambassador Muhammad Shahrul Ikram bin Yaakob, the two representatives performed a symbolic handover of the ASEAN flag to Ambassador Guterres, followed by a ceremonious flag raising in front of the embassy.
A final speech by Phillippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez was followed by a video screening on Timorese culture. Guests, who included diplomatic envoys from ASEAN members and other states, private sector leaders and US government officials, were served Timorese cuisine alongside further conversation on culminating future partnerships.
With Timor-Leste’s formal admission into ASEAN, the celebration at its Washington embassy further underscores the promising strengthening of U.S.–South Asian relations, reflecting the constructive role Washington’s diplomats continue to play in supporting regional cooperation and shared prosperity.
