Cristina Balan is the ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the United States. Prior to this position, she has served as deputy president of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), being directly responsible for the international and diplomatic affairs of the party.
Ambassador Balan’s activity within the PDM, a political party with strong pro-European beliefs and also a ruling party since 2016, has focused on establishing and developing PDM partnerships with foreign organizations, as well as on the communication with the diplomatic corps representatives and international organizations in Moldova. Ambassador Balan represented PDM at various external events and in meetings with EU and U.S. officials. She was also an active member of the Socialist International, being part of the Budget and Finance Committee.
In 2017, she received the award of the Top Female Politician of the year in Moldova.
Ambassador Balan also served as the chairwoman of the Foundation for a Modern Democracy, which provides a platform for dialogue between experts and opinion leaders from the Republic of Moldova and foreign organizations, including think tanks and progressive foundations. Ambassador Balan coordinated both the public and the research activities of the foundation.
Ambassador Balan has an impressive background in management area, having worked for top international companies and organizations, of which 15 were in management positions. She is an economist and holds a degree in business management from the Free International University of Moldova.
Ambassador Balan is married and has two children. She speaks fluently Romanian, Russian and English.
