Ambassador Lyutha Sultan al-Mughairy presented her credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on April 8,2011. Prior to her appointment, Mrs. Al-Mughairy served as Ambassador and Head of the Department of the Secretary-General of Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2008.
She was a career international civil servant at the United Nations from 1980 to 2006, serving in various positions in the Political Affairs, Peacekeeping and Public Information Departments, and as a member of several appointment and promotion bodies. In 1980, she became the first Omani to join the United Nations Secretariat, accepting the position of Information Officer for the International Year of Disabled Persons, after having established and managed the English radio and television stations in Oman, from 1975 to 1979, and having started the English Radio and Television Service in Abu Dhabi. Also at the United Nations, Mrs. Al-Mughairy was Chief of the News Distribution Section of the Office for the Research and Collection of Information (1986-1992), Principal Officer of the Department of Political Affairs’ Electoral Assistance Division (1992-1995), head of the Public Liaison Service of the Department of Public Information (1995-2003), and Chief of the Information Centres Service (2003-2006). At the latter post, she oversaw the far-flung network of United Nations Information Offices around the world, which comprised 64 Centres, six Information Services and eight information components.
Mrs. Al-Mughairy received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the American University in Cairo, Egypt (1970). While studying there, she worked as a broadcaster, programme producer and translator at Cairo Radio. She later undertook postgraduate studies in broadcasting at the Institute for Development Studies at Sussex University in the United Kingdom and at Columbia University School of Journalism in New York.
