His Excellency Francisco A. Cortorreal

Ambassador Francisco A. Cortorreal, the new Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations presented his letters of credentials to the Secretary General of the United Nations, H.E. Ban Ki-moon, on April 16, 2014. Ambassador Cortorreal has been an Alternate Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations since 2004. He brought his experience in Economics and Education to the field of multilateral diplomacy, since  he has an extensive background in these two areas.

In January of 1987, Ambassador Francisco Cortorreal worked at “ONAPLAN”, the National Planning Office of the Dominican Republic until April of 1990. During his  tenure at ONAPLAN  he held the position of  Senior Economical Analyst in several departments:  Economical and Social Planning,  Regional Planning and at the Latin American & Caribbean Institute for Economical & Social Planning.  Furthermore, he was the National Technical Counterpart for Cooperation Agreements for the ONAPLAN/BID program in the Regional Planning Department.

In addition he was Joint Professor for a course in Sociology at “Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo UASD” (Autonomous University of Santo Domingo) on April & May of 1989.  He taught Macroeconomic and National Accounting at “Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago-UTESA” (Technological University of Santiago) from April 1987 to August of 1990.

He then went on to work at the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic as an Economist in the Department of Economic Studies until 1990 when he moved to New York.

Upon arrival at NYC he was selected for the position of Director of the Dominican House of Culture (Casa de la Cultura).  On 1991, he began his career as an educator in the New York City Department of Education until June of 2004, at which time he was asked by the former President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández, to join the Foreign Service.

Because of his long time commitment to the PLD – Dominican Popular Liberation Party (Partido de la Liberación Dominicana), of which he is the New York State Branch President since 2005, he was elected as Member of the Central Committee since 2005.

The State of New York has certified Mr.  Francisco A. Cortorreal as: School Administration and Supervision; Teacher of Bilingual Education; Assistant Principal of Elementary, Intermediate and Junior High Schools; Assistant Principal in Special Education and Supervisor of Bilingual Education.

He is the President of the Board of Directors of the Dominican Teacher Association, Inc. since 1996 and President of the Pedro Francisco Bono Foundation, Inc. since 1997.
