Gyan Chandra Acharya was appointed Ambassador of Nepal to the United Nations on November 25, 2009.
Acharya was Foreign Secretary of Nepal from 2007 until his appointment. Before that, he held the post of Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and World Trade Organization in Geneva; serving concurrently as Ambassador to Switzerland from February 2003 to February 2007.
From September 1998 to February 2003, he was Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry and Joint Secretary (Director General) Europe–American Division/South Asia and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Division. From April 1998 until September of the same year, he served as the Ministry’s Joint Secretary (Director General) Economic Relations and Coordination Division.
Before that, Acharya was First Secretary/Counsellor, Embassy of Nepal in Germany, from 1995 to 1998. In the years before that, from 1991 to 1995, he served in the United Nations and International Organizations Division of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Office of the Foreign Secretary. He was Second Secretary in the Nepalese Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, from 1986 to 1991.
He joined the Foreign Service of Nepal as Section Officer in March 1983 and served in the European Division of the Foreign Ministry until 1986.
Acharya received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Tribhuven University in 1981 and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University in 1984.
He was born on November 20,1960 in Kathmandu, is married and has two children.
