Robert Yamate is the Chargé d’Affaires of Mission for U.S. Embassy Dakar. He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister Counselor, with extensive experience in multi-agency collaboration and management affairs.
Prior to Dakar, Yamate was assigned to the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research where he worked on integration and coordination within the Intelligence Community.
Yamate has previously served as the permanent Charge’ d’Affaires in Apia, Western Samoa, and as Consular Officer in Tokyo, Japan. His other overseas assignments include Management positions in Budapest, Hungary; Antananarivo, Madagascar; Montreal, Canada; AIT Taipei, Taiwan; Harare, Zimbabwe; Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire; and Geneva, Switzerland. His domestic assignments include tours as Deputy Executive Director in the Bureau of Human Resources and Watch Officer for the State Department Operations Center.
His State Department service has been recognized by a Senior Foreign Service Performance Award, three Superior Honor Awards, and five Meritorious Honor Awards.
He is a native of Monterey Park, California and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the California Polytechnic University. He also has a Masters of Arts degree in Education from the University of LaVerne, California, and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Yamate’s foreign languages are French, Japanese, and Hungarian.
Yamate is married to Michiko Yamate. They enjoy tennis, travel, and working with animal rescue organizations abroad.
