Matthew T. Harrington, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, was nominated by President Obama as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Lesotho in August 2013 and was confirmed by the Senate on September 16, 2014.
He recently completed a two-year assignment as the Director of the Office of Analysis for Africa in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. From 2010 to 2012, he served as Foreign Policy Advisor to the Commander of U.S. Army South in San Antonio, Texas. He was posted as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Windhoek, Namibia from 2008 to 2010 and as Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs in Lisbon, Portugal from 2005 to 2008. From 2003 to 2005, he served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Lome, Togo, and from 2000 to 2003 as Political Officer in Harare, Zimbabwe. He has also served as the Sudan Desk Officer in the Bureau of African Affairs, Watch Officer in the Operations Center, Political Officer in Brasilia, Brazil, and Consular Officer in Accra, Ghana.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 1991, Mr. Harrington worked as a Program Associate with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and, before that, as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zouerate, Mauritania. He earned a B.A. in history from Washington and Lee University.
